First Day!!!



We made it thru the first walking day and overall it was a wonderful adventure.  The scenery was very cool as we climbed up 1,500 feet in a strong breeze at our back.  The windmills along the ridge were spinning full speeds and made an interesting sound.  We stayed at the peak a very short time because we had trouble standing up!  

We walked along many fields and tried to figure out the crops - maybe wheat and mustard and peas??  The fields are very rocky but they still planted row crops and they looked very healthy.  

There were many pieces of art and artifact along the route.  It had been in existence for more than a thousand years. They had a circle of stones reminding people about the many citizens killed by Franco in 1923. 

Our paws are barking but the wine we just drank is working on our sore muscles.

Camino 2023

Dianne and I have scheduled our next Camino walk for April and May 2023. We have chosen the Portugese route starting in Lisbon, Portugal and finishing in Santiago, Spain. We will start our walk on April 15 and finish on May 30. The total distance will be roughly 400 miles and we have about 33 days when we will be actually walking. The walk is south to north so hopefully that helps with the weather since it will warm up over those 7 weeks. We are very excited and look forward to another experience which is both physical and spiritual.

Made It To Sarria

Today we traveled to Sarria which is the town you need to start at to get your Compostela in Santiago. You need to walk 100 Km and Sarria is just beyond that point. We started our walk in a small mountain town with a single street and many Pilgrims. Our walk went smoothly and had a short climb but then descended 1,500 feet to Sarria. Along the way we saw more cows being moved - they went right by us after we had finished our lunch. The trail was generally in good shape and moving forward we expect the trails to improve due to the higher traffic. Many of the trails were thru the woods with plenty of shade. The fog hung around till about 11 so kept things cooler. We are staying in a wonderful B&B up in the mountains built from a ancient building. The ceilings are original and so are the walls - we look out over the hillsides of hay. Very special. Tomorrow begins the final 6 days of walking into Santiago. We are very excited.
